About
Aroha Counselling

We are a counselling service that specialises in working with young people aged 6 to 26 in an interactive, positive and growing therapeutic environment.

We partner with our clients and their whānau to address concerns such as anxiety, relationship and family issues, school refusal, fears and phobias, low self esteem and confidence and self-harming behaviours.

Heather’s Background

I have studied in the USA, UK and New Zealand, and have had the honour to work in many capacities with both children and adults during their times of emotional difficulty and change. Previously, I have worked with the children of the Christchurch Earthquakes, provided emotional first aid in conjunction with crisis responders, answered helpline calls and acted as an in-person Youthline counsellor.  Most recently, I was the only child and adolescent counsellor in the South Otago region, serving 13 area primary and intermediate schools.

My counselling philosophy is to provide clients with age and stage appropriate support in a non-judgmental, hope filled way. I work using primarily in person-centered, narrative and strengths based methods, using Play Therapy and Drawing Therapy and am a registered member of NZCCA.

Our Office

Our (easy to find) office is located 1 minute off of SH2 in Whakamarama, Western Bay of Plenty just past Te Puna. We are wheelchair accessible and have plenty of parking. Our therapy space is bright, welcoming, interactive and comfortable so that our clients (of every age) have a positive and safe place to come to.  Aroha Counselling also employs a gentle and calm therapy dog, Otis, who lives for the cuddles and treats given to him by his special counselling friends.
